Promoting Community Well-Being: Council Achievements 2011–2018

  • Continued to stabilize the budget and build the City’s financial reserves.
  • Focused on informing and involving citizens in decisions about their community by hiring a communications manager, redesigning the Colwood website, and updating communication procedures.
  • Established new standards for community engagement: open houses, improved website, updated newsletters, surveys and social media.
  • Designed and implemented new City logo to signal positive changes taking place in our community.
  • Continue to recognize community members and encourages acts of kindness and community service through the Pay It Forward program.
  • Made progress on enhancing safe routes to school through the transportation master plan and with projects such as securing funding for school crossing guards at 3 Colwood locations, sidewalk improvements on Wishart Road.
  • Implemented the Colwood City Watch Program to encourage city employees to take an active role in reducing crime and increasing public safety within the community.
  • Continued to work with BC Transit with a view to enhancing transit services.
  • Initiated project for a community garden at Colwood City Hall – coming 2015.
  • Implemented a Westshore Graffiti Outreach Program.
  • Ongoing training, recruitment and procurement of firefighters and firefighting equipment like the new Fire Engine 52.
  • Initiate 5-year strategic plan for police services.
  • Review of emergency planning governance.
  • Planning support for Westshore performing arts centre.
  • John the Baptist Heritage Church Centennial planning, funding and hosted celebration.
  • Community events: Christmas Light Up, Halloween Bonfire, Solar Colwood tours, Haunted Heritage tour.
  • Developed and launched new City website and social media sites.
  • Planned for park enhancements, including Trees for Tomorrow grant for trees to help restore the creek in Colwood Creek Park.
  • Participated in the coordination of major community events such as Rock the Shores.
